Check the level of your lake and plan the time for
your seawall project. Some bodies of water are regulated by the
local power company. Those companies should have a website that
gives you the current lake levels as well as those of the past and
predicted levels. Alabama Power has just such a website: http://www.alabamapower.com/lakes/iframe_lakelevel.asp
Seawalls,
Seawalls, Seawalls, Seawalls, and more Seawalls
Seawalls are defined as embankments that prevent
the erosion of a shoreline by a body of water.
The link below will take you
to an article written by a professional seawall installer. It will give
you enough information about sea wall construction and the options
available so that you will be able to ask the right questions, judge for
yourself the value of the answers you are given and make an informed
decision.
Above is a short animation of how a GeoStone seawall works. Notice that the water is allowed to flow into the backfill. This is good because it means that the water cannot be trapped behind the wall. Let's face it, water will get behind the wall and water will eventually find its way out. Whether it be a segmental wall like GeoStone or a concrete wall, wood wall, or a concrete block wall with mortar, the installer must provide a way for the water to escape from behind the wall. Some alleviations to this problem involve weep holes. These evetually become clogged, so the water will find another exit. Usually that other exit is beneath the footing which can undermine the integrity of the wall. Because GeoStone is segmental, the water is allowed to escape in the areas where the blocks join, so essentially, every single block in the wall is surrounded by weep holes. This gives GeoStone the best drainage capabilities of any other type of seawall on the market.
